TPS552882: USB PD application and output fluctuation problem for TPS552882 development

Part Number: TPS552882
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS55288, TPS55289, TPS552892

Tool/software:

Hello, experts

We are designing a power station using TPS552882 and made several sample products.

During sample testing, we found 2 major problems and need to solve those problems.

Design requirement of out product are below:

Input Voltage : 5~12V

Out Voltage : 5V fixed

Load : 5V-1A multiple load to be connected (1~6), so maximun load to be 30W

*USB-PD application available

and Currect problems with sample test are :

1. This curcuit does not sense usb-pd. When we connect USB-PD 3.0 power supply and usb-pd Cable, it does not work. Our product supposed to take 12V input when USB-PD connected. Do we need to put additional USB-PD controller IC chip on this circuit? or any correction required for this circuit?

2. When 5V 2A input power connected and 3 multiple 5V-1A output (total 5V-3A) has been connected, the Vout and Iout shows huge fluctuation (I think it is in the Hiccup-mode).

At this situation, we want our circuit provides 5V-0.66A (excludes power losses) to each 3 load component. Then how do we need to change the design? Adding a current limit resistor between ISP and ISN may helpful? (Currenty no resistor exists between ISP and ISN)

Curcuit diagram of the sample product has been attached. We truly need experts' advices.

Thanks

  • Hi Seungchul,

    Thank you for reaching out.

1.TPS552882 is a fixed output buck-boost. If you want to control the input voltage for TPS552882, a former stage DCDC with PD controller is needed.

2.To limit output current, a output current sense resistor is needed. TPS552882 has fixed output current limit. So if you set the output current limit=0.66*3, it can only output 2A maximum. For programmable output current limit, you can use TPS55288 with I2C control.

3.With 30W maximum output power, you can consider TPS55289 or TPS552892.

Any problem please kindly let me know.

    Regards,

    Mulin
