TPS65185: Is it possible to detect epaper display total damage by reading and evaluation VCOM value?

Part Number: TPS65185

Tool/software:

We operate a fleet of epaper displays installed in the "wild" (train stations). Since we observe some vandalism in this environment, meaning fully smashed displays, we're looking for a way to reliable detect those damages by remote monitoring. There is no glass breakage sensor installed in the displays. Thus, we need a detecion in some other, "in-band", way.

TPS65185 can perform a voltage measurement on the VCOM pin to determine the kick-back voltage of the epd panel.

Would it be expectable to detect a smashed epaper display by reading this value and compare it against a certain threshold value?

Displaytype is Eink VB3300-NCC, epd controller is Epson S1D13524.

Thanks for any opinions on this.

  • Hi Klaus,

I do not think we have anyone familiar enough with this type of application to give good guidance - this device was developed several years back and the people most familiar with the device are no longer available. Your proposal does seem reasonable but would need testing to see how robust this solution would be to sense the glass breaking.

    Best regards,

    Matt
