BQ2973: Reverse battery connection

Part Number: BQ2973

Tool/software:

Hi, I am a product designer and require a Li Ion battery protection IC for detecting under voltage/over discharge and battery disconnection.
I am considering using one of your BQ2973xx.... series.
In my product the user will be using a single 'unprotected' Li Ion cell and when inserting the cell could reverse the battery.
My question is: Will the BQ2973 survive a temporary reverse polarity battery connection?

Best regards
Glyn

  • Hello Glyn,

No, the BQ2973 may not survive a reverse cell connection. The part was not meant to be used with replaceable batteries. It is meant to always be in the same pack as the battery. I have seen some customers use external circuitry to protect the device in the case of reverse connections.

Another caveat with that, is that usually when first attaching a cell, the part needs to have a charger connection in order to first awake the device. So this would have to happen every time a battery is replaced.
