TPS65987DDKEVM: EVM Expansion Board

Part Number: TPS65987DDKEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1046-DCI, TUSB1064, TPS65987DDK

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am trying to demonstrate a single USB-C cable solution for PD (20V 5A) + DisplayPort + USB2.0. Basically a setup of Source board-Sink board system for proof of concept.

The TPS65987DDKEVM alone can only do PD, but it has an Expansion Connector I/O for external USB2.0 and DP boards.

Are there such expansion boards that include TUSB1046-DCI/TUSB1064 redrivers for DP and also allow me to pass through USB2.0 lines from Host to TPS65987DDKEVM.

Thanks,

Ming

  • Hi Ming,

    Thank you for reaching out!

I will get back to you with my recommendations tomorrow.

    Best Regards,

    Aya Khedr

  • Hi Aya,

Have you been able to find any solution to this?

I know that 10G-EXPANSION-EVM is using TUSB1046-DCI/TUSB1064 redrivers for DP and also allow me to pass through USB2.0 lines, but they are not in production.

  • Hi Ming,

Your understanding is correct. The 10G-EXPANSION-EVM is no longer available as we were not able to guarantee that it could provide 10G with various setups.

The TPS65987DDK EVM can be used to show DisplayPort PD messages on the CC lines and can be configured through the GUI Tool. See the following application note for more information.

The TPS65988DK EVM has the TUSB546 to test DP Source. See more in the EVM user's guide

Please let me know if you have additional questions/concerns.

    Best Regards,

    Aya Khedr

  • Hi Aya,

Thank you for the reply. They are very helpful.

I think the best option is to stick with TPS65987DDK EVM as it can be used to test DP source and sink. Although 10G-EXPANSION-EVM is no longer available officially from TI website, I would still like to confirm that if I connect the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM to a TPS65987DDK EVM, it would be able to source and sink DP and USB data. We are probably using a tiny fraction of 10G data rate, so not meeting 10G is not a problem at all.

    Thanks,

    Ming

  • Hi Ming,

Unfortunately, we no longer support the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM. The TPS65987DDK EVM can still enter DisplayPort Alternate Mode without a "Display" and can be seen through PD messaging as outlined in Section 4 of the Application Note provided.

One more suggestion would be to utilize the TUSB1046/1064 EVMs for a DisplayPort proof of concept as well. See TUSB1064 product page here

  • Hi Aya,

    Thank you for confirming.

I think I will try to read DisplayPort PD messages on the CC lines from TPS65987DDK EVM. I suppose that will require a USB PD analyser. Could you suggest a specific one that TI usually uses for this application?

    Best regards,

    Ming Guo

  • Hi Ming,

We use the TotalPhase PD analyzer for internal testing, which is unfortunately discontinued. I do also recommend the Ellisys Type-C tracker, which is more on the pricier side as its pretty powerful.
