LM78M05-MIL: LM7805 is getting hot

Part Number: LM78M05-MIL

Tool/software:

Hello together,

in my design I use the LM7805 voltage regulator for regulating voltage from 12V to 5V. There are no high currents in my design but the voltage regulator is getting hot (ca 85°C). I checked my design for short circuits or wrong lines but everything is correct. Why is the LM7805 getting so hot?

  • Hello,

What current are you running your LM7805 at? I would like to calculate your thermal dissipation and the case temperature increase.

In the absence of significant power dissipation from the LDO and if the LDO is still regulating voltage (undamaged), the only way it would be getting hot is from proximity to other heat sources or conduction through the thermal layer. Could be another device or the transformer in proximity. Please share a picture of the assembled board and the layout.

    Regards
