TPS7H5001-SP: Low duty cycle operation question

Part Number: TPS7H5001-SP

Tool/software:

We are using the TPS7H5001-SP PWM Controller to control an FBS-GAM01P-C-PSE driver to a FBG20N18B GaN FET gate to drive a transformer 23uH to generate our 5V housekeeping voltage supply. In the next design we will change the transformer to increase the inductance to 200uH for our next design revision.

We are running the duty cycle very low at ~10% for the circuit load and at just ~3% for a 160Ohm dummy load test.

We have observed the output of the PWM controller going flat at 5V constant output in this setup.

During testing we initially observed a 240mA current draw which would last just a few seconds before the PWM controller stopped generating a PWM signal and the current draw would drop to just 60mA.

Can you please advise on the component operation in this circuit environment?

  • Hey McMillan,

To confirm, the issue you encountered was the controller drawing such current or the overall circuit?

If it is the controller than I would say there was something in the circuit that likely damaged the controller.
That current value would be well above what we expect.

The behavior of the controller you mentioned could be damage, or it could be a poor connection on one of the inputs to the controller

Do you have a schematic  and measurements around the pins of the device?

    Thanks,
    Daniel
