TPS25947: Parallel operation

Part Number: TPS25947

Tool/software:

As per our product requirement we need to use the eFuse part TPS259474ARPWR in parallel configuration. The concern here is that if the current is unevenly distributed between the two parts and any one of the two part tries to deliver more than the rated output current (5.5A) then both the parts will shut off even though the total current is within the limit of cumulative output current of both parts (5.5 + 5.5 = 11A).  So it is essential to know that the difference in output current between both the parts will not be significant.

What is the maximum delta in current we can expect from this parallel operation, considering identical routing for both the ICs?

  • Hi Rutvik,

This will completely depend on the path impedance which will include trace impedance and Ron of the device. I cannot comment anything on the trace impedance. For Ron, the possible variation is from 15mOhms to 45mOhms but this is across PVT. In your case the V and T will be same as this is parallel operation. So you won't realistically see more than 4-5 mOhms variation and worst case being around 10mOhms.

If you share your operating voltage, current and temperature, I can provide better estimate on how much variation you can expect.

  • Hi Arush,

The maximum operating voltage is 25V and maximum expected current is around 8-9A. The operating temperature of product will be in range of -10°C to 50°C. As I have mentioned earlier, consider the trace impedance to be ideal for both parts. Thus, the only variation that I am looking for is between the two parts.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Rutvik,

Firstly I will mention, this is a 23V device.

Regarding your application, you can expect +/- 6% variation in Rdson of device from the mean value for your operating condition of 23V/4A to 5A for 25C.
