BQ24296: Lower Current than expected & confirming bits

Hi,

My customer is working through the BQ24296 GUI. 

They have confirmed BQ24296 and TUSB320 configuration and register information, and have 2 additional questions. 

 

1) Their firmware receiving the TUSB320’s CURRENT_MODE_DETECT (0x08) bit 5:4 with 00 even though using PD support adaptor. Is it expected? They think CC pins should detect 3A current setup, so these bits should be 11 instead?

2) Our firmware set the INPUT CURRENT LIMIT as 3A and PSEL pin set as LOW. However, BQ26296 provides only 1.5A to the battery. The resistor setting is following.

Do you have any solution to resolve this problem? Thank you!

    Thanks for letting me know! I have received an update from the customer - I will provide their schematic over email

    Customer email: 

    I have re-confirmed with correct CC supported adaptor and now CURRENT_MODE_DETECT bits are b’11. – 0x08[5:4] So, TUSB320 detects the 5V/3A information from the appropriate adaptor. Sorry for confusion.

    As for the BQ24296 register 0x02[5:0] information is b’011000 which is 2944 mA setting. However, the charging current was still around 1.5A for almost empty battery. I have attached our schematic capture around BQ24296. Please review and let us know if our circuit has some problems. Please let us know if you need other information as well.

    On the BQ24296 try decreasing the value of ILIM resistor (R215) to about 150 ohms.  This will increase current limit to 3A and give more charge current range.
