TPS1210-Q1: current sensing by MOSFET VDS

Hi,

I would like to use MOSFET (Q1) VDS for current sensing of the battery power line. Is it possible to use TPS1210-Q1 with 2A charge/discharge current?

    Hi Nishie,

    Yes, you can as this device has dual gate drive which allows for charge and discharge applications however there is no reverse current protection (TPS4812-Q1 does have this protection).

    Could you confirm if my understanding is correct?

    1. TPS1210-Q1 can sense the discharge current of the battery by MOSFET VDS, but it does not have reverse current protection for discharge.

    2. TPS4812-Q1 can sense the discharge current of the battery by MOSFET VDS. And it has reverse current protection for discharge.

    Hi Nishie,

    Yes, your understanding for 2 is correct. For 1, although the device will allow current to flow in the reverse direction, it will not technically sense it and it will not respond which can be a risk for the system; also, for any negative voltage not within the specified range, it is recommended to have a TVS diode to protect your system.
