BQ75614-Q1: Cell balancing using external mosfet

Part Number: BQ75614-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616-Q1

Tool/software:

BQ75614-Q1 currently supports internal cell balancing with a max balancing current of 240mA per CB channel. Some of our battery packs end up being highly imbalanced and thus require gross balancing before being put in use again. We require balancing current much more than 240mA during this time. So, we are planning to implement a detachable circuit with external Mosfets allowing balancing current close to 1A, to be used with this IC for performing gross balancing.

Thus, the question here is that will BQ75614-Q1 support external cell balancing? Has it been implemented before and tested?

Nothing about this is mentioned in its datasheet nor in any associated application note. But for a similar IC named BQ79616-Q1, the circuit is given in its application note (SLVAE87 – FEBRUARY 2019). Will the same circuit work for this IC too? I am attaching the screenshot of that circuit here.

  • Hello,

Yes, our device supports external cell balancing and it has been implemented before. However, we do not have documentation on implementation. The circuit you have attached is the implementation of external cell balancing and it will work. Note that the external FETS should be placed some distance from your IC for heat dissipation

    Thank you,

    Zachary
