BQ24640: Can we connect load in parallel with super capacitors at the output

Part Number: BQ24640

Tool/software:

Hi,

In our application we are using bq24640 for super capacitor charging control and we are using its output as our input. Our unit runs on bq24640 output.

1. Input voltage is 24V and output we are operating is 12V. So we are connecting 5 super capacitors in series 25 F, 2.7 V. We require 1min Backup time for our application.

2. Can we connect both super capacitors and load in parallel together at the output. Refer to the image below how we are planning to connect and suggest whether BQ24640 is suitable for our application or not. If any changes require please mention.

3. Fig A : load and super capacitors are in parallel.

4. Fig B: Load input is Oring of BQ24640 super capacitors output and Adapter output.

Please suggest which figure we need to follow for our design.

Regards,

Sreehari.

  • Hello Sreehari,

    2. Can we connect both super capacitors and load in parallel together at the output. Refer to the image below how we are planning to connect and suggest whether BQ24640 is suitable for our application or not. If any changes require please mention.

I recommend figure B. Both figures should work, but you would have to program the charge current to support the supercap charging and the system load. If the system load is removed or the load current is changed, the supercap may charge at an unexpected charge current.

    Best Regards,

    Christian.
