TPS7A87: Can the LDO (TPS7A87) Provide Reliable Output for Load Currents Below 1 mA?

Part Number: TPS7A87

Tool/software:

Hello,

Subject: Can the LDO Provide Reliable Output for Load Currents Below 1 mA?

Part Number : TPS7A87

In the datasheet of the LDO I'm considering, the output current Load regulation (IOUT) is specified to range from 5 mA ≤ IOUTx ≤ 0.5 A. However, The datasheet does not include a specific graph showing the regulator's performance at low load currents. but the general load regulation graph is present in the datasheet. I have attached the snapshot of that graph below along with the load regulation parameters shown in the datasheet.

My Application design is intended for a CMOS image sensor application with the following specific requirements:

  • Input Voltage (VIN): 5V
  • Output Voltage (VOUT): Adjustable, up to 3.5V
  • Noise Requirements: Ripple < 30 µV peak-to-peak
  • Quiescent Current (IQ): Should be kept low to optimize power efficiency
  • Minimum Load Current: Less than 1 mA

Could you confirm whether this LDO can maintain stable operation at such low current levels, or provide any additional guidance or data regarding its performance under these conditions?

Thank you!

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your question.

We validate the devices from 5mA to 500mA as you can see from the electrical characteristics table. This means that the device will be guaranteed to operate under the following conditions.

Though, in our recommended operating conditions, you can see that load current can be as low as 0mA. Therefore, yes, the device should be able to operate under low load conditions.

    Hope this helps!

    Best Regards,

    Hannah
