UCC28950: Power supply controller solution compatible with DC input 155V

Hi,

I am looking for a TI power management IC that meets the following requirements:

・Input voltage: 65V–155V (with hold-up down to 35V)
・Output: 5V, 16A (with overcurrent protection at ~21A)
・Efficiency target: About 90%

I couldn’t find a single IC that directly supports these specs. Could you recommend a suitable solution, such as an isolated DC/DC controller (e.g., UCC28950) or a multi-stage buck approach?

Any relevant ICs, reference designs, or application notes would be greatly appreciated.

    If you are looking for a design that meets your power needs you could try the TI reference design library.  The following link will bring you to the TI reference design library search engine.  You enter your input and output power requirements and hit enter.  The search engine will return links to TI reference that come close to your design needs if they exist. https://www.ti.com/reference-designs/index.html

    I have reviewed your design requirements and they can be met with a UCC28950 in a phase shifted full bridge (PSFB).  The following link will bring you to an application note that goes through the step by step design process of PSFB using the UCC28950.  https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slua560

    If you desire the design to go into over current protection with 21 A of load current.  I would suggested setting up the cycle by cycle peak current limit of your peak current mode PSFB using the UCC28950 to trigger at 21 A of load current.  This prevent the design from delivering energy through the main transformer if 21 A of current is exceeded.

    If the design continues to hit the cycle by cycle peak current limit when using the UCC28950 the design will enter over current hiccup mode.  For details on how this over current hiccup mode protection works refer to the UCC28950 data sheet.  https://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/ucc28950

    Your power level at 105 W could be handled by an active clamp flyback (ACF) and should be able to meet your efficiency requirements.  TI has an ACF controller part number ucc28780 that you can use for this application.
