TPS650250: VDCDC2 low and drifting

Part Number: TPS650250

Tool/software:

Hi,

I have a few custom boards that we designed with the TPS650250.

Out of 20 that we built, five have an issue with the VDCDC2 being too low and slowly drifting.

The VDCDC2 is programmed to be 1.85V. For example one board I measured VDCDC2 at around 1.3V to 1.4V and slowly drifting up.

Has anybody experienced an issue like this? Thanks.

  • Hi Gregory,

    Thank you for your patience.

This is not a known issue with this device.

Are you able to share your schematic so I may potentially look into root causes for this issue? You may share it through direct message if privacy is a concern.

    Thanks!

    Best Regards,
    Sarah

  • I believe the 2.2uH inductor on VDCDC2 has cold solder joints on the few boards that were exhibiting this bad behavior. After trying a lot of things like fresh solder on the resistive divider, warming the boards and cleaning flux residue with solvent, what seems to really help is fresh solder on the inductor pads and then a thorough cleaning. These boards were professionally assembled by a solid, well established assembly house, not by hand. But, with any new design, issues like this can and do crop up. It surely can be mitigated going forward, now that the issue is known and (hopefully) root cause is established. Thanks.
