TPS65988DK: Can TPS65988DK and TMUXHS4412 be used with DP 2.1?

Part Number: TPS65988DK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUXHS4412, , TPS65988, TUSB1044

Tool/software:

Hi team,

My customer is considering specifications for USB PD in Alt mode with DP 2.1 (20Gbps).

They are currently thinking of using two ports for DP.

Is it possible to use this configuration with TPS65988DK and TMUXHS4412?

Also, if this configuration can be used, does the firmware of TPS65988DK support TMUXHS4412?

Or is it possible for the user to configure Alt mode?

Best regards,

Kyohei

  • Tps6598xDK doesn’t support DP2.1 protocol. Can you reach out to your local TI sales rep for alternatives?

  • Hi Ghouse,

    Thank you for your reply.

Does the USB controller chip (TPS65988DK) affect the data rate of DisplayPort?

If it does, what kind of impact does it have?

My understanding is that the USB controller chip determines whether to use USB mode or Alt mode and instructs the MUX chip accordingly.

I believe the DisplayPort data rate depends on the performance of the GPU, the bandwidth of the MUX chip, and the processing capability of the display device.

Additionally, based on the application note below, I think the combination of TUSB1044 and TPS65988 can support DP2.1 lines. What do you think?

    Best regards,

    Kyohei

  • Hi,

If the messaging content cannot instruct the far end to enter DP 2.1 the data rate will not reach the UHBR20 speed. TPS65988DK does not have the capability to support DP2.1 messaging so the link will not enter DP 2.1 mode and cannot achieve UHBR20 speed.

  • Hi Tommy,

    Thank you for your reply.

I have reviewed the following document.(TPS6598x DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Rev. B))

It seems that these registers are to be configured using a tool, but does this mean that due to hardware or tool limitations, the TPS65988DK cannot be set to DP2.1?

Additionally, regarding MUX, my understanding is that there are no TI products that support DP2.1 (20Gbps), and those that do support DP2.1 are limited to 10Gbps. Is this correct?

    Best regards,

    Kyohei

  • Hi,

TPS65988DK cannot support DP2.1 due to FW limitation.

I am not sure if there are TI MUX that can support UHBR20 but if you claim that you support DP2.1 you need to support the 20Gbps speed. The actual signaling rate will be checked during compliance so it will be marked as a failure.
