BQ27421-G1: application questions

Part Number: BQ27421-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, BQSTUDIO, BQ27421EVM-G1B

Tool/software:

Hi,

ASUS BSP team have some questions would like to consult us.
Quicky summary their questions as below and kindly feel free sharing your comments for our reference.
1. For BQ27421-G1 technical reference spec, it do not describe how to W/R CHEM ID process & register (Not including standard/extend CMD into specifications)
Could you please share with us how we can operate it ?
2. For other competitors use the BQ27421, do they usage TI default golden image or implement their own parameters to write process ?
Basically , we were survey GitHub repository and found out simple BQ27421 function but not including write CHEM ID in this section.
If guest had usage, relevant kernel code should be uploaded it. Am I correct ?
3. For BQ27421-G1 devices, is it only can using Parallel battery or Series battery also can be used ?
In Parallel battery module, Are there any limit Parallel number in battery module?
what would you recommend when we use Parallel battery modules?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Alice Fan

  • Hello Alice,

    1. For writing the ChemID, you will have to use BQStudio and the EV2400 to do that.

    2. Not entirely sure what you mean by default golden image, but every customer will work through and complete the learning cycle process that is specific for the battery they are using. Then after completing the learning cycle process they can do accuracy testing to see if other parameters need to be adjusted. There will not be code for writing the ChemID as this is proprietary info

    3.  This is a single cell gauge so you can use multiple cells in parallel. The max capacity for the battery that can be used with this gauge is 8000mAh, so as long as the parallel batteries don't have an effective capacity greater than 8000mAh then it will work with the gauge.

  • Hi Adrian,

    Thanks for your reply.

May I know is it possible to programming BQ27421-G1D Chem ID into BQ27421EVM-G1B ?

Golden image means the FlashStream file from bqStudio. It could be written into data memory.

Do your customers all use BQStudio+EV2400 to write ChemID?

We want to know the process that MCU writes the total ChemID into data memory by i2c command.

    Thanks!

    Best regards,

  • Hello Alice,

No, it is not possible to program the ChemID from BQ27421-G1D to BQ27421EVM-G1B since these gauges have the ChemID preloaded onto the device. If you need the ChemID from BQ27421-G1D then you need to buy that device.

For the MCU to write the golden image file using the flash stream we have an app note that goes over this: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua801/slua801.pdf

The ChemID is already programmed onto the gauge since these gauges have pre-loaded ChemIDs. This can not be changed.
