TPS7A20C: Random latching off of regulator. Toggling EN resets it.

Part Number: TPS7A20C

Tool/software:

Hi,

I have multiple instances where a TPS7A2030PDBVR output is latched shut off while the EN pin in high (equal to VIN 4.2V).

When I toggling the EN pin low then high the regulator resets and then works fine.

I can find no damage or reasons. I do have larger than recommended capacitor loading (300uF). I have several 0.1uF ceramics nearby as well.

What situations could cause the regulator to shut down with Vout = 0 and EN = Vin? I have tried brief shorts and higher than recommended Vin and can not reproduced the failure on demand.

Thanks,

Doug

  • Hi Doug,

Yes, you are well over the recommended COUT range. Is there a reason for this? Could you please share a schematic?

What is the load current? Are there any waveforms recorded which I can see for reference?

Power dissipation during start-up is high from large VIN – VOUT voltage drops across the device or from high inrush currents charging large output capacitors. Under some conditions, the thermal shutdown protection disables the device before start-up completes. Another potential explanation is inadvertent disabling of the device due to a faulty VIN to EN connection which can trigger the active discharge circuit. I'll be able to debug further if the above questions are answered.
