BQ40Z50-R2: BQ40Z50-R2: Sleep Mode Current Consumption Higher Than Expected

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2

Tool/software:

Hello TI team,

We are testing the BQ40Z50-R2 using the demo board with a 2S1P configuration to measure its power consumption. The measurement setup places the multimeter in series between B+ and 4P.

The measured current consumption is as follows:

  • Normal mode: Fluctuates mostly between 320 ~ 450µA, occasionally exceeding 500µA (can be ignored).
  • Sleep mode: Fluctuates mostly between 130 ~ 250µA, occasionally exceeding 300µA (can be ignored).

The Normal mode current is close to the datasheet specifications, but the Sleep mode current shows a significant deviation.

We would like to ask:

  1. Is this level of Sleep mode current consumption considered normal?
  2. What factors could contribute to an increase in self-discharge current?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Hello Tom,

The amount of current you are seeing with normal mode is expect but your current expectation for sleep mode does seem pretty high compared to the expected 50 - 75µA

1.)The levels you are seeing in sleep mode current consumption is not considered normal

2.) Could you share your registers setting and share a file of the testing to see how the registers react to each other. In battery gauge should only be turned on periodically during sleep mode to register certain values. However there could be value/register that is causing the system to become alerted causing it to get out of sleep mode. I've attached a image of conditions that would cause the status to activate and exit.

  • Hi Alan,

The attachment is my gg file.please check.
    The product is 2S2P.

Additionally, I would like to ask: if the circuit design is similar to the TI EVM board, which peripheral components might affect the current consumption?

    Thanks!

  • Hello Tom,

What type of test/activities/ test setup are you perform whenever you have the IC in sleep mode? Is the system left idling or are you drain/charging/switching the cell during sleep mode? Also could you export a file of the time, current, voltage, capacity during the test in sleep mode?

    Thank you,
    Alan
