TPS25751EVM: Should I ONLY be using the USBCPD Application Customization Tool to configure my setup (it seems to configure or atleast have some knobs to turn for configuring BQ25798)? Do I also need to use BQ Studio or the TI charger GUI?

Part Number: TPS25751EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61033, BQ25798EVM, , TPS25751, BQ25798

Tool/software:

My current setup: I have hooked up a TPS25751EVM with a BQ25798EVM. I have bypassed the buck converter on the TPS25751EVM with a boost supply (TPS61033) powered from Vsys on BQ25798EVM (set to 1s charging at 4.2V) whose 5V output is connected to PP5V on the TPS25751EVM.
My goal: I am looking to have a sink only setup (capable of being a sinking host, hence the TPS25751) that has a battery backup for graceful shut down on Vbus removal, among some other features while device is without Vbus power.

  • Hi Michael,

You only need to use the USBCPD Application Customization Tool for configuring the entire TPS25751+BQ25798 setup. TPS25751 integrated I2C control will configure BQ25798 battery charging voltage/current, pre-charge and termination current. During run-time, TPS25751 also automatically configures the OTG or input voltage/current limit based on the negotiated PD contracts.

You do not need to use the BQ GUI to configure BQ25798 if you're using TPS25751 integrated I2C control. If you have a picture of your setup we can help verify the connections are correct, in addition there is a section in the TPS25751EVM user guide explaining how to connect the two EVMs: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvucp9a/slvucp9a.pdf#page=26

Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns!

  • For the TPS25751S with external FETs,Is there a way to control/configure the GATE_VBUS and GATE_VSYS outputs directly using I2C commands? Like if I wanted to inject 12V onto the VBUS pin, without any USB-PD negotiation, and just pass that 12V to my battery charger input... basically use the VBUS pin like a barrel jack power adapter. Would I be able to load a configuration that allows this?

GATE_VBUS/VSYS are automatically controlled by TPS25751S firmware. Hot-plugging 12V onto VBUS directly violates PD Spec and is not supported by TPS25751S (for safety and interoperability). You can configure TPS25751S to negotiate a 12V PDO through a valid PD negotiation. If you want to implement hot-plug connection a discrete circuit/logic will need to be implemented outside of the PD controller.
