TPS22810: About VBUS power mux OTG support with TPS22810

Part Number: TPS22810
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2120

Tool/software:

Consider the setup drawn in a) below, with TPS2120 to mux two different input sources to a charger IC, and TPS22810 in parallel to provide a path for Source 1 USB OTG (max 1.5A at 5V) generated by the charger IC. Source 2 also support OTG, but with a separate boost IC. In this specific case the 0V Source 2 has been selected by the mux, while Source 1 is 5V. It can be assumed that Source 2 would never go above 5V, while Source 1 should support up to 16V.

1. The TPS22810 datasheet states that the maximum output voltage is min(VIN+0.3, 20). So, does that mean that this scenario would break the TPS22810 (VIN being 0V, VOUT 5V)?

2. Given that the example shown in a) causes problems for TPS22810, do you have any other proposed solution / parts to solve this (power muxing with OTG support)?

3. Setup B) could be a potential option, adding yet another boost, not using the charger IC's internal OTG boost. However, it is not required to provide OTG to both Source 1 and 2 at the same time, so if there is a 1 input-to-2 output mux component that can be suggested, at the question mark in C), that is also of interest.

  • Hello Southern,

For power muxing with TPS22810 is not fileable option as it doesn't have reverse current blocking and PGOOD or FLT pin to disable other device.

You can do parallel operation with it but that requires same source.

Let me know if you want to know further.

    Thanks

    Amrit
