LP2985: Supply Current

Part Number: LP2985

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am using LP2985 to regulate 5V to 5V and seeing a nominal current draw of 30mA from the regulator. Is this typical? If I replace Cbias with a 10kohm resistor the current drops to 7mA.

Thanks,

  • Hey,

It seems to me that the problem is most likely that you're operating the LDO without enough headroom (5V to 5V). This is likely causing the pass element to saturate leading to higher quiescent current. An LDO is typically not recommended for applications where VIN ≈ VOUT.

    Recommendations

    1. Provide adequate headroom:

If you need a regulated 5V rail. VIN should be tens to a couple hundred mV above VOUT. See datasheet for exact dropout values for your situation.

     For example, 5.3 to 5V

2.Use a load switch if regulation is not required

    Hope this helps,
