BQ25629: How to connect USB D+ and D- when other peripherals are in the same system?

Part Number: BQ25629
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3USB221A

Tool/software:

Hi team,

I have a system where USB adapter(power source) or a PC(power source & data DFP) can be connected to the system's USB terminal.

The system has BQ25629 for the charging but also a USB 2.0 device is present.

How should one connect these two ICs?(a BQ charger and a device) Do we connect them directly?

Upon connection, BQ25629 will conduct a usb detection via D+ D- pulses. I assumed it will follow-up with Hi-Z on D+ D-, in order to let other devices start USB enumeration; however, I was not able to find how the BQ pins are going to behave after DCP detection. Can you elaborate?

Thanks,

Luke

  • Hi Luke,

When end application will have a USB 2.0 device in the system it is recommended to use a multiplexer IC to properly isolate the D+ D- lines between the devices. Proper isolation ensures the other device does not interfere with D+/D- input type detection on the BQ25629 and then also ensures the BQ25629 does not cause any issues with data transmission to the USB 2.0 device.

There may be a newer multiplexer device available, but in the past we have recommended the TS3USB221A IC for this function.

    Best Regards,

    Garrett
