BQ40Z50-R1: BQ40Z50R1

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM

Tool/software:

Hi

In our 4S1P Smart Battery pack we use BQ40Z50-r1 IC. We have developed the battery pack and put the batteries under shutdown mode.

The battery pack voltage is around 15V.When we exit from shutdown mode and measured the voltages we found that one cell voltage  goes below 1.7V and we could not  charge the batteries.

We have updated our PF shutdown and Shutdown voltages with 2500mV per cell and charge present threshold 11000mV,,Also we are triggering ESHUTDOWN AT 12.6V Even also cell get fails..

We could not find the root cause for this issue,

KINDLY HELP US AT THE EARKIEST.

Regards

MAX

  • Hello Max,

Could you verified that you are using new cells that were at the same voltage/capacity when they were assembled and showcase your GPCCHEM calculator files that shows the difference % of the ChemID you are using.

  • Hi

    we will share soon.

    A query w.r.to issue

The battery pack is discharging to deep discharge level. But we have enabled PCHG Command( set value 1).But why the voltage is reducing and we could not charge the battery packs.

If the IC has 0V charging why it is not trigeering to charge the battery pack?

We have set the below value in pack

    Is the setting correct

Also we have set shutdown voltage to parameters below

Power Shutdown Shutdown Voltage 2500 mV
Power Shutdown Shutdown Time 10 s
Power Shutdown PF Shutdown Voltage 2500 mV
Power Shutdown PF Shutdown Time 10 s

Why it is discharging below this voltage and it fails.

  • Hello Max,

I've received your question and start the investigation onto the solution.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Max,

After rereading the original comment it seeming that you have different aged cells if you are seeing a major difference in cell voltage espically as it reaches it termination voltage. With that being said the best method to verified your cells are indeed similar to each other either than the part number on them is using a different battery gauge that is 1s and putting them through the GPCCHEM calculator and verified that they each come up to the same ChemID with the same error difference %.

However for charging you cells at low voltages I would recommend reviewing your Chg Current Threshold to verified the current you are pushing through the system is indeed closing the fets to allow for charging. But also review parameter such as your termination voltage, PF Shutdown Voltage, Shutdown voltage, and etc.

    Thank you,
    Alan

  • Hi

    Thanks

We have set the charge current threshold as 50mA in the Data memory.

and the Shut down parameters as follows

and the rem voltage as follows

  • Hello Max,

Your question has been received and will be answered promptly.

    Thank you,
    Alan

  • Hi

    Any update on it.

  • Hello Max,

After rereading the original question it is seeming that your issue is that you have one cell that is one the same as the rest due to various version such as aged, quality control and etc. I would still like to see the GPCCHEM calculator to verified your chemID.

*This is an example of what I am looking for and don't use this for your application

    Thank you,
    Alan
