BQ25756: Why is inductor value limited to 15 uH in datasheet

Part Number: BQ25756

Tool/software:

Hi all,

I completed a successful design based on BQ25756. In this project, I use a 24VDC power source for charging 12S or 14S batteries, with CC current limited to 1A. Everything is fine with this setup.

Now, I tried to increase this CC current up to 3A, but MOSFET get too hot (around 90 ºC in 5 min), so I was thinking about reducing the switching frequency (as currently, it is set to the maximum, 600 kHz). This will drive me to increase the inductor value, but I'm limited by this 15 uH max value specified in the DS.

So, for keeping an inductor ripple current within 40 % of IL at 300 kHz, I would need an inductor much higher than 15 uH.

In the end, I would like to know where does this limitation come from and some alternative way to decrease the switching frequency.

Kind regards,

Roberto.
