BQ25798: Charge batteries using 1 adapter

Part Number: BQ25798
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25751, TPS54531

Tool/software:

I am using a USB-C adapter to charge batteries using BQ25798. Incorporated TPS25751 to control the chargers, feed the output of the TPS25751 to TPS54531 to step down the voltage and use the voltage as the input for the BQ25798.

USB C > TPS25751 > TPS54531 > BQ25798.

I am confused if i can use 1 adapter and 2 chargers? how do i setup the power between the USB PD component and the chargers?

can you comment as well on the values of the current limiters (ILIM_Hiz)?

  • Hi Cid,

We have a reference design of TPS25751 powering and firmware controlling a BQ25798 directly at https://www.ti.com/tool/USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01.  There is a buck converter in the design that provides a 5V rail for the TPS device.

You can use 2 chargers in parallel, with one configured to terminate before the other.  However, you would need new firmware and an I2C mux since the 2 BQ25798 chargers in parallel have the same I2C address.

    Regards,

    Jeff
