Dear Team,

I'm looking for a PD-Controller for an external notebook-monitor. It will be connected to the USB-C port of the notebook and sinks 5V/3A in the first step. IF an external power-supply (up to 100 W) is connected to the monitor the USB-C port of the monitor swaps the power role and provides power to the notebook for charging. Up to now I used the TPS65987 for the current design. Which IC do you recommend for a new design, as the TPS65987 is no more recommended for new designs? The monitor requires USB only, DP alternare is not required.

As far as I can see the TPS25751 is not suitable, because it can source only 5V3A.

Could you provide a block diagram along with the different use cases for your design?

What is the power requirement for sourcing? Will the PD controller be paired with a battery charger?

thanks for your fast response.

I have attached a block diagram below. The PD controller won't be paired with a battery charger.

I assume I don't use the integrated 5V,3A sourcing switch at all and instead I use the integrated bi-directional load switch in DRP-mode: Sink => Source.

Hi Norbert,

In your current design the TPS65987, did you utilize Fast Role Swaps?

Are you looking to certify your new design to the latest USB-IF standards?

Hello Aya,

thank you for your answer. No in the current design no fast role swaps are utilized. If the new design has to be certified will be decided finally by the customer.

Thank you for clarifying.

Circling back to your original question on the TPS25751, this device is best suited for DRP battery charging applications. We do not have integrated I2C support for DCDC when sourcing >5V/3A.

The TPS25751 does have the following GPIOs similar to the TPS65987 but this implementation would not be compliant to the latest AVS requirement.

Hi Norbert,

The TPS25751 has integrated I2C control for TI supported battery chargers like the BQ25798, BQ25731, BQ25713, and BQ25756 used in DRP battery charging applications.

It currently does not have integrated I2C control for other external DCDCs used in Source-only applications.
