BQ24072T: max output current

Part Number: BQ24072T
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM4378

Tool/software:

Hello experts

Hope this finds you well.

We want to confirm the max output current

BQ24072T will be used in the boards equipped with TI AM4378.

What is the upper limit of the current that can be output when the system is operating during charging?

The data sheet of this charging IC states that the input current @in pin is 1.5A (max) and the output current @out pin is 4.5A (max).
If the system is operated while charging, is it correct to think that the input current of the charging IC + the battery output current <= 4.5A

Also, is the output current limited to 1.5A when the battery is empty

Thank you

Regards,

Zhou

  • Hi Zhou,

Refer to section 8.3 of the BQ2407xT datasheet for the recommended operating conditions.

    • The OUT pin can support up to 4.5A total. This includes current from the input supply and from the battery when it's discharging.
    • The charger limits input current to 1.5A max, based on the ILIM setting. That 1.5A is shared between charging the battery and powering the system load.
What is the upper limit of the current that can be output when the system is operating during charging?

It depends on what ILIM is set to, but the input path can only support up to 1.5A. If the system load is higher, the battery can supplement to make up the difference. The total current to OUT can go up to 4.5A.

Also, is the output current limited to 1.5A when the battery is empty

The charger only pulls 1.5A from the input, so that's all that's available if the battery is fully discharged. If the load demands more, it may not be supported in that condition.

    Best regards,

    Alec
