BQ79616-Q1: Technical questions related to functioncal safety

Part Number: BQ79616-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi team,

My customer has been considering BQ79616-Q1 for functional safety application. Could you please kindly answer the questions below?

The cells have the function which automatically stops the charging and the discharging when overcharging condition is detected. My customer assumes BQ79616-Q1 gets broken due to this function. If there is an abnormal mode in which the BQ79616-Q1 continues to produce voltage data with a normal value that is different from the actual cell voltage, the system cannot stop charging and discharging.

1. Is there an abnormal mode of BQ79616-Q1 that continues generating data that is different from the actual cell voltage?

2. Is it possible for BQ79616-Q1 to detect the operation of 1 by self-diagnosis, etc. and notify it to MCU by communication?

Best regards,

Shunsuke Yamamoto

  • Hello,

    Thank you for reaching out.

If I am understanding your question correctly, you are questioning whether the BQ79616-Q1 will be able to handle the overcharging conditions in the cells, as well as if this may cause a situation where the device still reports normal values, regardless of what the true cell voltages are.

The BQ79616-Q1 has overvoltage and undervoltage protections that run when the device is in active or sleep modes. If there is a case where the overcharging condition is met, then the charging/discharging of the cells will occur, and a voltage reading outside of the device specifications will be seen.

Figure found at the BQ79616-Q1 datasheet.

Because these protection blocks happen prior to the Main ADC, these checks can report that there is an over/under voltage case, and no incorrect data would be shown. If these protections are flagged, then fault bits will be raised and can read by the user.

  • Hi Pranav-san,

Thank you for the reply. My question is that if the BQ79616-Q1 gets broken, Does BQ79616-Q1 still continue outputing correct cell value?

    Best regards,

    Shunsuke Yamamoto

  • Hello,

As per the datasheet, the BQ79616-Q1 ADCs are separate from the over/under voltage comparators, the ADCs will continue outputting the read cell values, but while raising a fault that the over/under voltage thresholds were met.

Described below are the actions made when over/under voltage conditions are met. If there are no resets occurring, the ADCs continue reading.

    Thank you for your questions,
