BQ24171: Operation of the safety timer

Part Number: BQ24171

Tool/software:

If the end current is set to 150 mA for this device, we believe that the device will not finish charging all the time if the load side always consumes 200 mA of current.
In that case, how does the safety timer operate?

1. If I disable the safety timer, will the charging never end?
2. If the safety timer is enabled, is it correct to assume that charging will end when the time set by tTTC elapses?
Also, in that case, will the behavior of the STAT pin be abnormal (blinking)?

  • Hi Okashita,

If the 200mA load is in parallel with the battery, then termination at 150mA can never occur. The only way for charge to stop is with the safety timer.

Regarding 1, yes.  If termination does not occur, then charging continues indefinitely.

Regarding 2, yes.  STAT blinks due to timer expiration (fault).

    Regards,

    Jeff
