BQ77915: BQ77915 Grounding Question: Should B- Be Isolated from System Ground?

Part Number: BQ77915

Tool/software:

Hello,
I’m new to working with Battery Management Systems and currently focusing on the BQ77915 IC for my initial projects. According to the "Typical Application" section in the datasheet, I understand that all ground connections are tied to B-. When designing the PCB, should I isolate B- from the other system grounds ? If so, what is the technical reasoning behind this isolation?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Yasir,

You want to separate the high-current of the battery pack from the low-current IC path. This is to make the design more robust to unintended currents/transients or ESD.

The separation can be done in the layout or with a 0-Ohm resistor/net-tie. You still will want BAT- to be electrically connected to IC ground.

    Best Regards,
