BQ40Z50-R2: How can i do learning cycle for 35000mah battery

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQSTUDIO

Tool/software:

I have designed a 4S10P battery pack using Samsung INR18650-35E cells.

  • Full Voltage: 16.8V

  • Nominal Voltage: 14.8V

  • Full Capacity: 35,000 mAh

  • using IC is BQ40Z50

However, in BQStudio, I cannot enter 35,000 mAh as the Design Capacity because the maximum allowed value in the Gas Gauging section is 32,767 mAh. Similarly, I cannot input 51,800 cWh as the Design Energy. How can I perform a learning cycle to achieve accurate full capacity readings?

And also requirement is it should charge 20A,can thia BQ40z50 is capable of 20A Charge?

  • Hello Ashok,

The process of increasing Design Capacity is not documented but the process is outlined below for scaling the battery gauge by a factor of 2.

-Increase your R sense resistor from  0.001 to  0.002
-Go into your calibration page and pass 2 amps through the battery gauge but classified it as 1 amp
-Scale every parameters by a factor of 2, and in your case the new design capacity would be 17,500mAh

But currently the highest design capacity you can input is 32,767 mAh without modification and modification would need to a lower resolution.

    Thank you,
    Alan
