TPS4810-Q1: high-side driver with reverse current protection

Part Number: TPS4810-Q1

Tool/software:

I'm designing a bi-directional converter and need the following functions.

use back-to-back MOSFETs on high-side.

When discharging (from converter to bus):

the inner MOSFETs (converter side) always on.

the outer MOSFETs (bus side) act as ideal diode.

When charging (from bus to converter):

the inner and outer MOSFETs always on.

I'm now using 3 MOSFETs (multiple in parallel actually just to simplify) to achieve them.

2 MOSFETs in back-to-back with TPS48100-Q1 so when I need to do charging I can turn both on.

1 MOSFET with LM5050MK so when discharging I have ideal diode.

I'm wondering if there's one controller has all the functions I need so I can cut down one MOSFET.

  • Hi Bill,

Which feature from above does TPS4810 not cover for you?

This device has dual gate drive so you can setup back to back FETs with individual control of each FET. This seems to match your description from above.

If I am missing something please provide a rough sketch to explain.

    Thank you,

    Sarah

  • Hi Sarah,

Thank for the reply. Sorry, I should have explained it more clearly. The following diagram is what I need.

  • Hi Bill,

    Thanks!

The body diodes of the FETs can still conduct when the FET is off so theoretically if you want to charge you only need to enable the M1 side, and when you want to discharge you only enable the M7 side.

To also achieve reverse current blocking would be tricky in this specific case.

TPS4812 does have bidirectional current monitoring, which would allow you to shut off the FET if reverse current is occurring with simple Or gate.

Have you considered this device? https://www.ti.com/product/TPS4812-Q1

    Thank you,
