LP2981: Thermal resistance for Legacy and New chip

Guru 19645 points
Part Number: LP2981
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2985

Tool/software:

When comparing the Legacy and New chips, the Rθjc values are significantly different.

Would you please let me know the background why the values are large different?

By the way, looking at the LP2985 thread, there is an answer that is close to the value for the new chip, so I'm guessing the value for the legacy chip is a typo. Is that correct?

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi Satoshi-san,

The legacy device came out in 2004, and unfortunately, we don't have any documentation on how exactly these numbers were calculated back then.

But the new chip (those with a suffix M3) came out in 2023, and for those devices, the thermal numbers were calculated with the current JEDEC standards (details are in this paper https://www.ti.com/lit/an/spra953d/spra953d.pdf)

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Regards,

    Bobby
