BQ24232H: Do you have any device which can stop charging immediately after transitioning to CV mode?

Part Number: BQ24232H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25185, , , BQ24232

Tool/software:

Hello guys,

One of my customers is looking for a Li-Ion battery charger like the follow.

1. Li-Ion 1S1P charging.
2. Standalone operation.
3. a charger which can stop charging immediately after transitioning to CV mode.

Do you have any device which meets their requirements?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

The BQ25185 is likely the best fit for your customer's application based on the information provided. I recommend reviewing the datasheet to confirm it meets all requirements.

    Best regards,

    Alec

  • Hi Alec,

Thank you very much for your reply.

    I checked BQ25185 datasheet.

I think this device termination current is 10% of fast charge current.
Also the termination current can not be changed.

So I think their requirement, No.3 can not be achieved.

If you have any idea to achieve No.3 requirement using BQ25185,
could you please give me your idea?

Thank you again and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hello Kazuya,

The highest termination current you would be able to reach with a stand alone charger is the BQ24232H and set ITERM so it is 50% of the ICHG. You wouldn't terminate right at the transition to CV, but you would not be in CV for very long.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello Wyatt,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I told your recommendation to the customer.
They considered and they want to evaluate BQ24232HA
because BQ24232HA is better characteristic and newer than BQ24232H.

They want to evaluate BQ24232HA using EVM.
We don't have BQ24232HA EVM but we have BQ24232 EVM.

Can BQ24232 EVM be used instead of BQ24232HA EVM?

Thank you again and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hello Wyatt,

I'm sorry I mistook to write EVM name.

The correct EVM name is BQ24232H EVM because BQ24232HA has not been prepared.

Could I ask you an additional question as the below?

    Q.
Is BQ24232H EVM better to use for BQ24232HA evaluation than BQ24232 EVM?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hello Wyatt,

Could I ask you one more additional question as the below?

    Q2.
What is major difference point between BQ24232, BQ24232H and BQ24232HA.
Are those operation temperature, VBAT(reg) and Min/Max accuracy of VBAT(reg)?

    Thank you and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hello Kazuya,

Is BQ24232H EVM better to use for BQ24232HA evaluation than BQ24232 EVM?

I'd recommend using the BQ24232H EVM to evaluate the BQ24232H. That said, both EVMs are nearly identical, so either can be used.

What is major difference point between BQ24232, BQ24232H and BQ24232HA.

The BQ24232H was released several years after the BQ24232 and changed the battery regulation voltage to 4.35V, along with a few other minor improvements. The BQ24232HA is functionally the same as the BQ24232H, but adjusts the VBATREG spec from 4.35V typical to 4.35V max.

    Best regards,

    Alec
