BQ25723: The battery ceases charging when the system power reaches a high level

Part Number: BQ25723

Tool/software:

To accommodate the increased power demands of our system, the sense resistor at the charger input to 2 mR.During testing,we observed that the battery stops charging when the system operates under a high load(approximately 130W).I attemted to modify the IIN_HOST(0X0FH/0X0EH)setting using the EV2300 interface, but the changes do not appear to take effect. The readbacj value of this register also changes during operation. The attached file contains our schematic diagram,in which resistor R750 has been modified to 5mR.

Looking forward to your reply.Thank you!

  • Hi, Duan,

I took a quick look at the schematic. I did not see any input caps. Are there any?

    Regards,

    Tiger

  • Hi,Tiger,

They are placed in the lower-left corner of the schematic.Additionally, the AD+ in the diagram is set to 14V.

    Regards,

    Duan

  • Hi,Tiger,

Additionally,I would like to know if I can read the charger's input currebt value through register 0x2Bh.If possible, how can this be implemented?Currently, the value read from this register during operation with adapter is zero.

The register values when charging stops are as shown in the figure below.

    Regards,

    Duan.

  • Hello Duan,

Additionally,I would like to know if I can read the charger's input currebt value through register 0x2Bh.If possible, how can this be implemented?Currently, the value read from this register during operation with adapter is zero.

Did you correctly enable the ADC?

They are placed in the lower-left corner of the schematic.Additionally, the AD+ in the diagram is set to 14V.

    Thank you for the clarification.

    Schematic review:

    • R757 should be 6.8kohm.

    • System caps/input caps should be a mix of ceramic and tantulum

Pleas let me know if you have anyother questions.

    Best Regards,

    Christian.

  • Hi Christian,

Thank you for your reply. After enabling the ADC function, values can now be read from the registers. However,as mentioned earlier, since our resistor has been changed to 2mR,Iam unsure how to convert these readings to determine the actual current value.

Regarding the first issue Iraised about the battery stopping charging during high power operation,I noticed it hasn't been fulliy resolved.Would you kindly assist in further diagnosing this problem?

    Regars,

    Duan.

  • Hi, Duan,

What is the problem? Could you reiterate?

    Tiger

My problem is as stated above.

  • Hi, Duan,

Maybe you hit the input current limit or trigger a fault condition. Did you see this on the TI EVM?

    Regards,

    Tiger

  • Hi Tiger,

The register values when charging stops are as shown in the figure below.

The register values as below. It seems like that there is no fault triggered. And as I said before,I used a 2 mR sense resistor in my design.Could this issue be causing an incorrect configuration of the input current limit value?Could you please review my register configurations to check for any potential issues? How should the register values of current be converted to actual measurements under these conditions?Besides,I don't have TI EVM of BQ25723.

    Regards,

    Duan

  • Hi, Duan,

BQ25723 does not support 2mohm current sense. My suggestion is to follow TI BQ25723EVM user guide when starting your battery charger design.
