TPS65381A-Q1: TPS65381A-Q1

Part Number: TPS65381A-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I would like to get some help regarding this PMIC. I plan to use this chip to feed my microcontroller and my ASIC, using its Diagnostic and Watchdog capacity, which is perfect when one wants to design with Functinal Safety in mind. I need only 3,3V from this chip so I want to use only the VDD3/5, therefore I would like to get rid all the components not required to use VDD3/5 full capacity, so I dont want to mount the external FET and also I would like to limit the coil and diode size if it is possible.

My question is, is it possible to use a smaller coil (and schottky) and use the chip without the external FET. According the design checklist it says: "The peak switch current for SDN6 is specified in the TPS65381x-Q1 data sheet, IVDD6_limit . The inductance should stay within the specified inductance range, LVDD6 , even if VDD6 is put into current limit which normally translates that the saturation current of the inductor needs to be higher than SDN6 current limit."

Ivdd6 limit is 2,5A thats why a 2,6A coil was chosen, but the VDD3/5 output can only produce 300 mA, do I still need the 2,6A for the VDD6? If not can I also reduce the schottky accordingly?

Thank you for your time and help.

Cheers

Zsolt

  • Hi Zsolt,

This chip may be a bit much for what you need but to answer your questions. A 2.6A coil was chosen to give some overhead. You can reduce the inductor and schottky as needed you will take on more risk with transients and shorting events.
