BQ41Z90EVM: Firmware and chemistry updates failing

Part Number: BQ41Z90EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350-R1A, BQ41Z90, BQSTUDIO

Tool/software:

Dear support team,

Recently, we ordered the BQ41Z90 development board with the intention of replacing our current setup based on the BQ78350-R1A and supporting electronics, in favor of an integrated solution that combines fuel gauging, monitoring, and protection in a single IC. Our main motivation for the change is to take advantage of the updated Dynamic Z-Track algorithm.

We connected our 8S cell battery pack directly to the development board and, initially, the system functioned well, with stable communication and successful configuration updates. However, during a temperature-related register update under Settings → Configuration, several critical registers, including the number of series cells, were unexpectedly reset to zero (see attached screenshot).

Since then, I have encountered the following issues:

  • Unable to reprogram the firmware (bqStudio error: "Program FlashStream: A read of data written failed comparison")

  • Unable to update the chemistry (error 1470)

Despite these problems, communication with the board remains intact.

The gauge is in full-access mode, battery voltage is sufficient, and we are using the correct FlashStream file for the BQ41Z90. However, all attempts to recover the device through firmware updates have failed.

We would appreciate any guidance on how to:

  • Restore firmware functionality

  • Re-enable chemistry updates

Thank you in advance for your support. Best regards, Gauti
