UCC21755-Q1: How to calculate the Gate Current.

Part Number: UCC21755-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi sir,

I am using a Mosfet of FF2MR12KM1H. It have a gate charge of Qg=1.2uc. As per my knowledge I calculated the required gate current I=Q/Traise (1.2uC/1..3nSec= 9.2A) So I can choose a gate driver which can have Source current of 10/12.

Is this way of calculation is correct. If not Please clarify.

2. Please clarify the difference between source and sink current!

3. I choose Rg= Vgs/I (15/9.2). Is this one correct. If not please clarify.

Thank you sir.

  • Hi Sravan,

If you want to compute the peak current based on the rise time requirement (1.3nsec), then the formulae of 1.2uC/ 1.3nsec looks right. However the result is much higher than 9.2A

Source current is the peak current from the gate driver to charge the MOSFET gate during turn on and sink current is the peak current to discharge the Gate during turn off

Gate resistance calculation involves few additional parameters, as explained in the datasheet section: 8.2.2.5 Turn-On and Turn-Off Gate Resistors

You can compute the gate resistance based on other parameters, the peak current is 10A for UCC21755Q1

    Thanks

    Sasi
