TPS25730: TPS25730DREFR High power operation

Part Number: TPS25730

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am planning to use TPS25730DREFR for my PD sink application and have below query:

  1. Referring to section 9.2.2 in datasheet, TPS25730 configured for 20 V at 3 A, does that mean that it negotiate source adapter with highest capability automatically up to 20V & 3A? e.g., if I connect charger having 5V/9V/15V operation, does it negotiate 15V operation? Considering current 3A maximum for all case.
  2. What happens when adapter specifications are not within set limits? does it settle with the standard 5V/3A operation? or minimum defined power is must for power delivery?

Thanks,

Nikunj

  • Hi Nikunj,

Referring to section 9.2.2 in datasheet, TPS25730 configured for 20 V at 3 A, does that mean that it negotiate source adapter with highest capability automatically up to 20V & 3A? e.g., if I connect charger having 5V/9V/15V operation, does it negotiate 15V operation? Considering current 3A maximum for all case.

Correct, if the TPS25730 is configured for a max of 20-V 3-A, it will attempt to negotiate 20-V 3-A max with any USB-C PD source adapter. If the adapter does not offer enough power (i.e. it is 15-V 3-A max), we will try to negotiate the next highest power. In you example, the PD controller would negotiate the 15-V contract.

What happens when adapter specifications are not within set limits? does it settle with the standard 5V/3A operation? or minimum defined power is must for power delivery?

By "set limits", I'm assuming you are referring to the ADCINx config values. If the adapter offers power greater than the config values, the PD controller will only request the max it is configured before.

If the adapter only offers a maximum power level less than the minimum(min voltage * operating current) set by the config values, the TPS25730 will still negotiate the max power of the adapter, but will assert the capabilities mismatch bit and toggle the GPIO.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Chris
