LMR33640: Clarification needed on if/when an external schottky diode is needed

Part Number: LMR33640

Tool/software:

Hey Buck Regulator Team,

I have a customer working on a new power supply design with the LMR33640 and we were hoping you could help to clear something up.

In Section 9.2 depicted below, the Typical Application circuit does not show an external Schottky diode being used. Based on some of the guidance and messaging posted on this E2E post by TI employees it does seem that this device does require an external Schottky diode. Can you please help to clarify if/when a Schottky diode is needed for this device? Is there any app note or location on the datasheet where this is clearly explained?

Any guidance you can share would be much appreciated!
