TPS25762-Q1: TPS25762: Configuring PDO for USB Data Communication + TPS25763 Base Firmware Request

Part Number: TPS25762-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am working with the TPS25762 and would like to know if it is possible to configure the PDOs to support USB data communication over the USB Type-C port, alongside USB Power Delivery. Specifically, I am referring to the "USB Communication Capable" bit that can be set in the Source_Capabilities message.

Could you please clarify whether this feature is supported via GUI in the TPS25762?

Additionally, I am planning to work with the TPS25763 as well. Would it be possible to obtain the base firmware binary for the TPS25763?

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best regards,
Fabrizio

  • Hi Fabrizio,

In the USB PORT(S) tab, there is a switch for USB COMM CAPABLE (Data).  This should be the switch you need.

The base firmware binary is the same for 763 and 762.

    Regards,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Thank you for your quick reply and clarification.

Just to confirm: is it possible to enable the USB COMM CAPABLE (Data) bit for PDOs with a voltage higher than 5V, or is it restricted to only the 5V PDO?

Also, thank you for confirming that the base firmware binary is the same for the TPS25763 and TPS25762 — that’s very helpful.

    Best regards,
    Fabrizio

  • Hi Fabrizio,

I don't have reason to suspect it should be limited to the 5V PDO.  But I need to double check with an engineer on my team.  He is out of office the next few days but I will provide an update by Thursday.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    Thanks for the follow-up.

In the meantime, I reviewed the USB Power Delivery specification, and it appears that for PDOs with a voltage higher than the 5V fixed supply, bits 29 to 22 (which include the USB Communications Capable bit) are required to be set to 0. This suggests that the USB Comm Capable bit may only be used for the 5V PDO.

Looking forward to hearing your team's confirmation once available.

    Best regards,
    Fabrizio

  • Hi Fabrizio,

The setting from the 5V PDO carries over to the other voltages.  So if 5V PDO shows USB capable bit set, all PDOs assume USB capability.  If USB capable is not set for 5V PDO, all other voltages assume there is not USB capability.

    Regards,
    Eric
