BQ24292I: Input current close to current required by system

Part Number: BQ24292I

Tool/software:

Hi,

We have the following scenario in one of our implementations:

  • The unit are connected to a 5V supply which can only supply 500mA. The charger IC also set the current limit to 500mA.
  • When the unit is running the system requirement is also about 500mA. When measuring the battery current, it can fluctuate between -100mA to +100mA (max). It is typically anywhere between these values.
  • We are observing a state where the charger can suddenly stop charging and the battery will drain until the unit powers off. Note that this is observed on a unit in the field of operation, so we do not have clear reasons why this is happening. We assume the power supply to the unit is connected.

Do you know if the continous switching of the current to the battery from small negative to small positive numbers, can cause the charger IC to stop charging and stay in this state until a reset?

Thanks,

Amos

  • Hi Amos,

DPM might be triggered. Please refer to 8.3.2.2 Dynamic Power Management on the d/s for the details. During DPM mode (either VINDPM or IINDPM), the status register REG08[3] will go high.

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • Hi Ning,

Thanks for the reply. I will check our implementation in detail, but I don't think we enter DPM mode. I will need to veirfy that,

I do suspect that we might enter the Supplement mode (8.3.2.3).

Is it possible to enter Supplement mode without passing through DPM mode?

    Thanks,

    Amos

  • Hi Amos,

Please read all the register readings and see. During DPM mode (either VINDPM or IINDPM), the status register REG08[3] will go high.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
