Hello Kevin,

The power dissipation across the pass element is too high and will cause the device to enter into thermal shutdown almost immediately. The Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of the package is 167.8°C/W and at 1.74 watts [(Vin - Vout)*Iout], the die temperature will exceed 300 C. It is recommended to reduce the input voltage with a buck converter or reduce the  load current.
