TPS50601A-SP: 7V input and 5V output

Could you please help me with some ideas? In our previous designs, we have successfully used the TPS50601A to generate output voltages ranging from 1V to 3.3V, with a 5V input. Currently, we are facing new constraints that require us to use a 7V input and obtain a 5V output.

According to the datasheet, the device supports input voltages between 3V and 7V. However, we would appreciate your guidance on whether this configuration—specifically using a 7V input to achieve a 5V output—is considered reliable for long-term operation.

Any insights or recommendations you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Vlad,

Since the TPS50601A-SP is rated for 7V, going from 7V to 5V should not pose an issue, and I have no concerns with reliability at those VIN / VOUT levels.

We do have a new device, TPS7H4012 (6A), that is rated for 4.5V to 14V VIN if you are looking for a device with a higher VIN range.

There is also the TPS7H4011 for up to 12A, and TPS7H4013 for 3A at the same VIN range as the TPS7H4012.

Thank you very much for the details.

I think we will go with TPS7H4011 afterwards. Are all of these space graded? I saw just on TPS7H4011 that the package is CFP30. But I want to be sure we can use these in space. And another thing, I saw that these are not supported by Webench, right?

Yes, TPS7H4011 are designed for space applications. The flight-grade part number (5962R2122101VXC) is QML class V rated with SEE, TID, and NDD reports available on the product page.

This device will also soon be offered in a rad-hard plastic package (QML class P) and in Space EP (-SEP) radiation tolerant versions.

To answer your other question, these devices are not supported by webench.

For simulation needs, there are SPICE and SIMPLIS models available for downloaded in the product pages.
