TPS62120: Is it possible to exceed Maximum ambient operating temperature of 85°C

Part Number: TPS62120

Tool/software:

Dear All, In our design implementation, we are utilizing the TPS62120DCNR component, which has specified operating temperature limits of –40 to 85°C and a maximum junction temperature (TJ) of 125°C according to the datasheet specifications. An important consideration is that the ambient temperature (TA) is directly influenced by the maximum junction temperature, which is determined by the power dissipation (PD) of the device.

Upon performing calculations considering the relationship between junction temperature (TJ) and maximum power dissipation, our analysis indicates that the ambient temperature could potentially reach up to 122°C.  I have couple of queries & clarification required.

Queries :

  1. Could you please check is this ambient calculation based on the maximum power dissipation & TJ ..?
  2. Is it acceptable to operate the device in conditions where the ambient temperature exceeds 85°C, provided that the junction temperature remains below the maximum specified limit of 125°C?
  • Hi Dinu,

Could you please check is this ambient calculation based on the maximum power dissipation & TJ ..?

    The calculation looks fine.

Is it acceptable to operate the device in conditions where the ambient temperature exceeds 85°C, provided that the junction temperature remains below the maximum specified limit of 125°C?

Tj is & Tstg are the critical parameters that should not be violated. As per your calculations, higher Ta should not hamper the device functionality.

    Gautam

  • Hi Gautam,

Table-1 : Calculated to find Maximum TA at actual current out /Vout/ Pwr Dissipation and shows the Ambient can go upto 122°C

Table-2 Calculates the Max Tj @ as per datasheet TA:85°C, Vout-5V , Iout 75mA, efficiency 71% . The max TJ calcuated is ~125

Table-3: Same as table-2 only the ambient is changed to 105°C, Vout-3V, Iput 10mA, the estimated Tj is 108°C

If I look at the calculation & the data sheet note: saying the TA is dependent on TJ, the Then table-3 estimation should work. Please Clarify ..?

  • Yes, table 3 estimation should work. The computation is fine.
