What is the function of the VSS to PGND diode in the schematic?

Is it necessary to install this diode?

    Hi Allen,

    VSS-RTN Schottky diode is optional.

    This diode will help to bypass or relief the internal VSS-RTN internal hotswap and body diode when you have a common mode current from VSS -> RTN. In some ESD tests this diode will enhance the ruggedness against the ESD to keep the chip operating correctly. But it is not mandatory.
