The input of my UCC21220DR gate driver is connected to the output of a current sensor (which provides a voltage signal). If I want an option for complete shutdown of the gate driver circuit—such that both outputs are turned off—what should I do? The current sensor I am using is TMCS1133B5AQDVGR?

Hi Shruti,

TMCS1133B5AQDVGR looks like an active low overcurrent detection output. You could apply this to the enable pin of the gate driver, so that when a short circuit is detected, the gate driver, The UCC21220 has a "disable" pin, which is inverted logic.

Can you consider switching to the UCC21331? It is the P2P update to the UCC21220, but it has an "enable" pin that you could drive with your active-low overcurrent detection pin to quickly disable both of the dual channel outputs. It also has a hardware deadtime control pin that helps add redundancy against shoot-through.

Yes, sure, I can upgrade to the UCC21331. My application requires two current sensors — one for the PFC stage, which is bidirectional and needs to sense 21 amps, and another for the buck stage, which is unidirectional and needs to sense 10 amps. What current sensors would you suggest?

Hi Shruti,

Here is a reference guide I wrote for low-side current shunt monitoring:

It uses a discrete shunt resistor and an op-amp to monitor the shunt voltage. If you reference the op-amp to mid-supply, you can measure bi-directional current.
