TPS16630-32EVM: TPS16630 is failing during the surge test (1KV)

Hello Team,

We are using TPS16630 , e fuse as protection element in our 48V system . We have used a TVS diode (SMBJ54A) which has working voltage of 54V and clamping voltage around 60V.

TPS16630 is set for over-voltage protection around 57V

During our surge test , we found that TPS16630 , over-voltage protection is triggering (response time is in uSec ? ) before TVS diode clamps to protect during the surge tests.

We are not able to find TVS diode with lesser clamping voltage (below 56V) while working voltage above 52V (too narrow requirements )

Do you have any suggestions for this ?

Our operating voltage is 48V , needs to have over-voltage protection around 54V and circuit needs to pass surge test as per IEC 61000-4-5

Please suggest.

Hello Vasu,

Welcome to E2E.

Over voltage will trigger on eFuse and turn off the FET. TVS diode should be able to clamp even then.

We have TVS diode recommendation excel below.

For surge compliance you need a device which can support input reverse polarity and reverse current blocking. For these, the devices should have back-to back FETs. Please use TPS2663 to handle surge. The data sheet has test results.

TPS1663 is NOT the right device.

Thanks for reply.

We have external reverse polarity protection circuit and reverse current protection is not a requirement .

If we change to TPS2663 , then if we use over-voltage protection feature of TPS2663 (say 57V) then clamping voltage of TVS diode will be more than 60V. So this causes the trip of output supply which stops system during the surge .

In this case what is your suggestion ?

If we are not using over-voltage protection feature of eFuse then what will be absolute protection limit of TPS2663 ?

What is the surge protection rating of TPS2663?
