BQ25188: Datasheet clarification Questions

Part Number: BQ25188
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25186

Tool/software:

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Firstly, I would like to express my appreciation for your datasheets and the way in which you describe the components.

Unfortunately, I have had some difficulty understanding the description of the BQ25188 this time. (Maybe I need more coffee!)

I would therefore like to ask a few questions about the BQ25188 datasheet and its corresponding behaviours.

1) With regard to the VBAT_CTRL register:

What exactly does PG_GPO do and where is it connected to? Despite having read the detailed description and circuit diagram, I am still unsure of its purpose.

2) I2C behaviour:

Could you tell me if there are any examples available for I2C communication?
Is there no section that specifies a valid read/write procedure for a specific register? Are the register addresses incremented automatically after consecutive writes/reads?.........

Best

  • Hi Felix,

I appreciate your feedback! Sometimes more coffee is needed, but this appears to be a mistake in the datasheet. Thanks for catching it, and we'll look to get it corrected.

    1) /PG/GPO (Power Good / General Purpose Output) is an open-drain output pin on the BQ25186. The PGO_MODE bit in the VBAT_CTRL register allows for this pin to be configured as either PG or GPO. This pin is not present on the BQ25188, so it looks like this bit was carried over from the BQ25186 datasheet.

    2) The BQ25188 uses a standard I2C interface, which is described in section 7.3.15 of the datasheet. I also recommend this app report, which explains how the I2C bus works: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva704/slva704.pdf?ts=1719603646002&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252F

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

    Best regards,

    Alec
