BQ24800EVM: External BATPRES comparator - what for?

Part Number: BQ24800EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24800,

Tool/software:

Hi,

On BQ24800EVM (kit for BQ24800 battery charger) there are two options for detecting battery presence - BATPRES signal. According to datasheet/guide:

"The BQ24800EVM supports two methods for detecting the battery for input to the BATPRES pin. The use may either use the independent comparator of the BQ24800 or the external TPS3898A Voltage Monitor (U2.)"

I can't find what's the difference between those options? Why I should use external comparator, when there's one inside BQ24800 already. What's the advantage of one solution over the other?

  • Hello User,

The BQ24800 only has on internal comparator, some application require multiple. So we added a second one on the EVM for validation. Both internal and external comparator can be used for battery detection.

    best Regards,
